Storytelling
Stop Selling Statistics. Start Telling Stories.
Think of a specific moment you remember about a brand.
Maybe it was a founder sharing why they started the business over coffee. Or an email that felt like it was written just for you. Or a social media post that made you laugh out loud.
Why does that one moment stick? You forgot you were being marketed to; it made you feel something.
The Problem: You’re Drowning People in Numbers
When you’re building your business, it’s easy to lead with the facts:
- We’ve served 500+ clients this year.
- Our prices are 20% lower than competitors.
- 9 out of 10 customers recommend us.
These are impressive! But here’s the hard truth: people don’t make decisions based on stats. They make decisions based on feelings and use stats to justify what they already decided.
When a potential client hears “500 clients served,” their brain goes numb. They think, “That’s nice, but do I fit? Will I be just another number?”
And when they feel like just one of many, they don’t call. They don’t book. They scroll.
The Fix: Share One Human Moment
Instead of telling people how many clients you’ve had, tell them about one client’s real experience. Instead of listing features, describe a single moment when your service changed someone’s day.
For example, as a freelance graphic designer, you could say, “I’ve designed 200 logos for small businesses.”
Or you could share this:
Maria had been running her bakery for three years, but her logo was still the one she made on Canva at 2 a.m. before her launch day. Every time she looked at it, she cringed. She wanted people to take her seriously, but she didn’t have the budget for a big agency.
When we sat down together, Maria pulled out a napkin with a rough sketch — a rolling pin and a whisk making a heart. We worked on it for two weeks. The day I sent her the final files, she cried on the phone. “It feels like me,” she said.
That logo is now on her storefront, her truck and over 10,000 cookie boxes a year.
See the difference? You’re not just a number anymore. You can picture Maria. And you want to experience that feeling with your own business.
The Method: Start Telling Stories
You don’t need a big budget or a marketing degree. You just need to pay attention to the real moments happening in your work.
- On social media: Share a before-and-after that shows a real client transformation. One photo. A few sentences. No fluff.
- On your website: Replace your “About Us” paragraph with a short story about the first person who trusted you. Why did they choose you? How did you help?
- In emails and proposals: Lead with a sentence that connects emotionally before you ever mention price. “I remember what it felt like to launch my first business with no one to turn to. That’s why I do this.”
- In conversations: When someone asks what you do, don’t list your services. Share a story and say, “I help people like Maria finally feel proud of the content they show the world.”
The businesses that grow aren’t always the ones with the best stats. They’re the ones who make their clients feel seen, heard and remembered. So next time you’re writing a post, sending an email or updating your site — skip the spreadsheet and tell the story instead!
