Success With a Side of Fear

Why does success scare us? This sounds a little bit unorthodox. Success, money and fame. That’s what people want, right? I think of success as a theoretical ladder. We climb and climb until we hit the top. What happens then? Are we doomed for failure after that?

I recently was blog hunting trying to find more information on this. I knew I couldn’t be the only one that felt this way. Side note, if you ever feel alone about something in the world, just Google it. I promise there are hundreds, if not thousands, of people that feel the same way you do.

Anyway, I was brought to a blog post on Lostgenygirl.com. She was asking the same questions that I was. What happens next? What if I never do anything better than what I’m doing now? Where do I go from here? Much to my surprise, she linked a TED talk from Elizabeth Gilbert, the author of Eat, Pray, Love.

After Ms. Gilbert’s success of Eat, Pray, Love, she felt lost and confused. What happens when her next book comes out and it isn’t well accepted? What if her entire career and self-worth was found in a book she wrote 30 years ago? The “what if’s” can really drag a person down.

Her attack to the what ifs are inspiring.

Separate yourself from your work. Sure, it’s your job, but what else brings you joy. But, your success and self-worth can’t only be found in your job. Look towards your family, your friends, your hobbies and interests. Find happiness in those. They will be with you long after you retire. And moments with them will stick with you forever.

You also have to realize what you did to get to where you are now. All those long, exhausting days, the nights with minimal sleep, the sweat, the tears; that’s how you got here. That’s why you’re successful. Don’t stop that. Giving up is not an option. You just work. Do what you do best and see what happens. You have to fight off your fear. Fear wins, and you’ll never climb higher on that ladder. You might even start going backwards.

The best aspects of your success and your work, came from you! You made the success, you accomplished your goal. You did it once, you can do it again. I promise.
