The concept of having a work-life has been prevalent in the workforce since the 1980’s. Generation X (Gen X), born 1961-1980, was the first generation to focus on this balance as they experienced the effects of Baby Boomer’s “work to survive” mentality.

While Gen X instilled the work-life balance in Millennials, the idea of this balance has adapted to a “work to afford my lifestyle” mentality. Although Millennials are really after income, employers are often overcompensating with tangible possessions and too much PTO.
