Bits and Pieces: Week 6

“If you have a strong purpose in life, you don’t have to be pushed. Your passion will drive you there.”
― Roy T. Bennett,
Staying focused and on purpose is a difficult thing to do.  To have a personal and professionally fulfilling career, understanding your purpose is essential.  Understanding what you wish to learn and grow and how that connects to the overall organization is where this starts.
  • Act on Purpose – How do the goals connect?
    • Your personal work goals and organizational goals should connect
  • Map your plan – understanding what needs to be done and in what order to support your purpose
    • Think of this as Project Management
  • Uproot your distractions – identify these
    • when you do not know where you should focus your attention, you tend to drift to things that you can do quickly and give you a feeling of accomplishment.
    • These things may not support the purpose of what you are doing.
When I was reading this HBR study, I found myself nodding my head with some of the elements in the 3 bullets above.  When I find myself asking the question “where did the day go” I can relate it back to these items.  Understanding and recognizing this will make you more productive and less stressed.
